Palm Beach Gardens is built around the car in a way that is easy to miss until you live here. The city sits right where I-95 and Florida's Turnpike pass closest together, PGA Boulevard carries most of the shopping and dining traffic, and many residents commute south to West Palm Beach or north toward Jupiter every day. Then they come home to a gated community where half the neighbors get around by golf cart.
The commute
Daily highway driving is where most serious auto claims begin, simply because of speed and volume. The stretch of I-95 through northern Palm Beach County is busy year-round and heavier in season, and the Turnpike interchanges see their share of merging trouble.
For commuters, the coverage choices with the most consequence are the ones that respond in a serious crash rather than a parking-lot scrape.
Florida's minimum required coverage is modest: personal injury protection for your own medical costs regardless of fault, and liability for property you damage. Coverage for injuries you cause to other people is not mandated for most drivers. If you have a home, savings or retirement accounts, carrying meaningful bodily injury limits is how you keep a bad afternoon on the highway from becoming a claim against those assets.
The other side of that coin is protecting yourself from drivers who skipped it. Uninsured motorist coverage on your own policy is what responds when the person who hit you has little or nothing to pay with.
The golf cart
Gated communities such as PGA National and BallenIsles are full of golf carts, and many residents drive them to the clubhouse, the pool and neighbors' houses. A golf cart is a vehicle that can hurt someone, and how it is insured is not always obvious.
Some homeowners policies extend limited coverage to a golf cart used on your own property or on a golf course, and often stop there. Use on community roads may fall outside that. Carts that have been modified to be street legal, often called low-speed vehicles, are generally treated like cars and need their own auto policy. Which situation you are in depends on the cart, how it is used, and the wording of your policies.
This is worth a direct question to your agent, especially if grandchildren visit and drive the cart.
Parking, storms and the car you love
Comprehensive is the coverage that handles a falling palm frond, a hailstorm, theft and, importantly in Florida, a car flooded by storm water. If you park outside, especially near large trees, it earns its keep.
If your car is newer or financed, ask about gap coverage, which addresses the difference between what you owe and what the car is worth if it is totaled. Rental reimbursement is cheap to add and much appreciated during a long repair.
Household changes
Adding a teen driver, changing jobs to a longer commute, or retiring and driving far less are all reasons to revisit a policy mid-term rather than letting it renew unchanged. Mileage and drivers are both rating factors, in both directions.
What a specific policy pays in a given claim depends on its own terms and exclusions.
