Driving in Boca Raton changes with the calendar. From roughly Thanksgiving to Easter the roads fill with seasonal residents and visitors, Glades Road backs up at lunch, and parking near Mizner Park becomes a sport. In August you can cross town in ten minutes. An auto policy has to account for the busy months, not the quiet ones.

Florida's rules, briefly

Florida is a no-fault state for injuries. After most crashes, the first money toward your medical bills comes out of your own Personal Injury Protection, regardless of fault. The state minimums are $10,000 of PIP and $10,000 for damage you do to other people's property.

Missing from that list, for most drivers, is bodily injury liability, the coverage that pays when you injure someone else. That gap is the most important thing to understand about auto coverage here. Plenty of cars on I-95 carry only the state minimum, which means if one of them hits you, the other driver may have very little coverage to pay for your injuries beyond your own PIP.

That is why uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage is worth a serious look in Florida. It is the part of your own policy that steps in when the other driver cannot.

What Boca Raton adds

Traffic density in season. More cars, more drivers unfamiliar with the roads, more fender benders in parking lots. Comprehensive and collision questions come up more often in a town like this than in a rural county.

The higher-value car question. Boca Raton has more than its share of luxury and performance cars. Repair costs on those are high, parts can take a while, and the rental reimbursement limit that seemed generous on a sedan may run out quickly while a European car waits for a part. Worth checking how long your rental coverage lasts, not just how much it pays per day.

Storm exposure. Being close to the coast means wind and water. Damage from a falling tree or flying debris is generally a comprehensive claim. Flooding of a car is also usually handled under comprehensive rather than a flood policy, which surprises people who assume their flood coverage reaches the driveway.

A college town in the middle of it. Florida Atlantic University brings young drivers and a lot of short trips around campus and the Spanish River corridor. If a household adds a student driver, that is worth a call before the semester starts rather than at renewal.

Liability limits deserve the most thought

The single decision with the biggest consequence is usually how much bodily injury liability to carry. A serious accident can produce medical and legal costs well past a modest limit, and anything above the limit can become the driver's personal problem. For households with real assets, raising this limit is often inexpensive relative to what it protects, and it is the base an umbrella policy is built on.

What tends to move the price

Your driving record and claims history, the car itself, how far and how often you drive, and where the car is parked overnight. Credit-based insurance scores are also used by many carriers in Florida. Bundling with a home or condo policy can change the numbers too, though not always in the direction people expect, which is a good reason to compare.

What any policy pays in a given situation depends on its own terms and exclusions.
