West Palm Beach has one of the most enviable positions on the Atlantic for anyone who owns a boat. The Lake Worth Lagoon runs along the downtown waterfront, the Intracoastal connects north and south, and the Palm Beach Inlet opens onto water where the Gulf Stream passes closer to shore than almost anywhere else in the state. The Bahamas are a day's run away in good weather.

All of that is saltwater boating, and a policy built for a lake is not quite the right tool for it.

Where the boat goes matters to the policy

Most boat policies define a navigation area, the waters where coverage applies. A policy written for coastal Florida use may not extend to an overnight crossing to Grand Bahama or a fishing trip well offshore. This is one of the most overlooked details in the whole document.

If you plan to cross to the islands, tell your agent beforehand. Extending the navigation area is often straightforward when arranged in advance and very difficult to argue about after something goes wrong in waters the policy never contemplated.

The hurricane plan

Many marinas along the lagoon and the Intracoastal require a written hurricane plan from slip holders, and many boat policies have named-storm provisions of their own. Some help with the cost of hauling out ahead of a storm; some carry a separate, higher deductible for named-storm damage; some set conditions about where the boat must be once a watch is issued.

Read both documents, the slip agreement and the policy, and make sure they agree. A plan that satisfies the marina but not the insurer, or the other way around, is a problem you want to discover in May rather than in a hurricane watch.

Valuing the boat

Two ways of settling a total loss show up again and again. One fixes the payout when the policy is written, so you know the number up front. The other pays what the boat was worth at the moment of the loss, after depreciation, which for an older boat can be well below what replacing it would cost. For a boat you care about, the difference is worth understanding before signing.

Ask too about the equipment that does not come with the hull: electronics, outriggers, tenders, dive gear and fishing tackle. Coverage for those varies widely.

The liability side

On busy water like the lagoon on a weekend, or around Peanut Island when the sandbar fills up, the risk is less about your own boat and more about other people. Your liability coverage is what responds if your boat injures someone in the water, damages another vessel or strikes a dock.

Two less obvious items belong in the same conversation. Fuel spill liability, since federal and state rules can make the owner responsible for cleanup costs. And wreck removal, because if a sunken boat has to be raised or removed, the cost can be substantial and owners can be required to pay it.

What wear and tear is not

Salt water is hard on everything, and the slow damage it causes, corrosion, osmosis blisters, failing seals, is maintenance rather than insurance. Policies are written for sudden accidents. Keeping service records helps on both fronts: it keeps the boat sound and it makes a genuine claim easier to support.

Boat show season

Every March the Palm Beach International Boat Show fills the downtown waterfront. If you buy there, line up coverage before you take delivery, particularly if the boat is financed, since the lender will want proof before it leaves the dock.

What any given policy covers depends on its own terms and conditions.
